Osun Oshun four arms

Illustration from "African Tattoo Designs" by Yeye Siju Osunyemi (c) 2007

These are the different spellings for the female deity of sweet or fresh water. She is represented as the embodiment of female beauty and sensuality. She is a warrior energy who uses charm and skillful diplomacy to achieve her ends.

She was taught divination using cowrie shells by Orumila. Her number is five, her colors are yellow and amber and the metals, gold and bronze. She is fond of honey, oranges and perfumes.

In the Yoruba tradition she is the deity of the Osun River. Yearly she is celebrated in the Osun Festival which culminates in a procession of the King and high priests and priestess to the Osun River in the Osun Grove. The festival is attended by tens of thousands of local residents and visitors from around the world.
